Where Are the Good Americans?
Haditha Massacre
Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani has been charged with not fully investigating the events at Haditha, Iraq, and failing to report a "Law of War" violation stemming from the November 19, 2005, incident that led to the death of 15 (24?) Iraqi civilian men, women and children.
During the first Article 32 hearing that occurred a couple of weeks ago, a Captain Stone was charged with essentially the same thing and the investigating officer in that case recommended that all criminal charges be dismissed because the government did not meet their burden.
The attorney says he is confident all the defendants in the Haditha hearings will be exonerated in what he believes has been a political witch hunt pushed by people like Congressman John Murtha (D-Pennsylvania).
An article in the San Diego Union-Tribune which was reprinted from the New York Times News Service, cites a report by "one Marine officer" that "inspectors suspected at least part of the motive for the killings was to send a message to local residents that they would 'pay a price' for failing to warn the Marines about insurgent activity in the area."
Curiously, that paragraph is missing from the same story in both the print and online editions of the following day's New York Times. For some reason, the Times had second thoughts about that paragraph, and removed it, after the copy had been sent to other papers over the wire.
