The Pied Pipers of the U.S. Army
- The US Army announced it will spend an estimated $2 million in the coming year to sponsor a channel at the Global Gaming League (GGL) website. Play at the channel will be free, but agreeing to "additional contact from the army" comes with signing up as a player.
- Army recruiters are entering high schools and targeting freshmen in an attempt to bring up lagging enlistment numbers. The so-called No Child Left Behind Act mandates that each school district that receives funds under NCLB comply with requests by military recruiters for high school students' names, addresses, and telephone numbers, unless a parent has "opted out" of providing such information. Below are excerpts from the Army's "School Recruiting Program Handbook".
- "The goal is school ownership that can only lead to a greater number of Army enlistments"
- "Black History Month: Participate in events as available"
- "Hispanic Heritage Month. Participate in events as available"
- "Be so helpful and so much a part of the school scene that you are in constant demand."
- "The football team usually starts practicing in August. Contact the coach and volunteer to assist in leading calisthenics or calling cadence during school runs"
- "Homecoming normally happens in October. Coordinate with the homecoming committee to get involved with the parade."
- "Some influential students such as the student president or the captain of the football team may not enlist; however, they can and will provide you with referrals who will enlist."
- "If you wait until they're seniors, it's probably too late."
- "Don't forget the administrative staff. ... Have something to give them (pen, calendar, cup, donuts, etc.) and always remember secretary's week, with a card or flowers."
- "Get involved with local Boy Scout troops. Scoutmasters are typically happy to get any assistance you can offer. Many scouts are [high school] students and potential enlistees or student influencers."
Should adolescents be hounded and stalked by military recruiters under any circumstances, and should they be pursued at all without the full knowledge and consent of parents or guardians? Should recruiters be allowed to use seductive sales pitches to youngsters too immature to make informed decisions on matters that might well result in their having to kill others, or be killed themselves? Is it child endangerment? Maybe. At the very least it is a nasty state of affairs. But then war is a nasty business, isn't it?
