SWEET HOME CHICAGO HAS A HEFTY PRICETAG
We just returned from Chicago where we stayed with my daughter and son-in-law, just down the street from my son, in their vintage apartment. It is beautiful with its hardwood floors and large windows. She has lived in possibly ten apartments since arriving in Chicago seventeen years ago for college. They left the last one when it was gutted and converted to $300,000 condominiums.

They're moving again because they want to buy a condominium themselves now that they are expecting their first child. Since my daughter gets much of her contract work from a company in Evanston, her spouse works there, and the schools are good, they are looking there to feather their nest.

The median price of a nest in Evanston in $290,800. That was in 2000. The median household income? $56,335. The condos they have looked at for around $200,000 all have lacked an essential. Most didn't come with an assigned parking space, others were extremely small or in an unsafe neighborhood.

"cryin' hey hey hey
baby don't you want to go
back to the land of California
to my sweet home Chicago"

...Robert Johnson's lyrics from "Sweet Home Chicago". Now I know why he was crying.
