MR. SENATOR, CAN I NOT HAVE A BABY?
In May of 2006 I wrote a letter to the editor of the Omaha World Herald concerning women's reproductive rights. My letter, which was printed in the Public Pulse, invoked the women of Nebraska to stand up to the men who make laws governing their bodies. None of the senatorial candidates were pro choice. I feared that hard-won reproductive rights would be eroded. And they were.
I did not know then that the 2005 Medicaid rebate law essentially ended an incentive for drug companies to provide discounts to colleges, causing prices of birth control pills to triple or quadruple at colleges across the country, including the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.
"Not every UNL student will notice the change", said Pat Tetreault, UNL's sex education coordinator. "It will be felt mainly by working class students who already are struggling to pay tuition." (World Herald Mar 28)
This is just another policy targeting the working poor, and women, specifically. Again I urge women to stand up and speak out. Can you hear me now?
