GIVE US SOME CREDIT...AND GIVE US SOME FAMILY PLANNING ASSISTANCE
The following Alegent Health ad appeared in my newspaper this morning. Alegent is my spouse's health provider:
As a faith-based health system, Alegent Health is dedicated to healing the body, mind and spirit of every person, regardless of their ability to pay. So when "Kenneth" suddenly became disabled, his medical bills mounted and his disability check was his family's only source of income. An Alegent Health financial counselor stepped in, helping Kenneth cover his medical treatment and get back to caring for his family...(here they went on to describe Alegent employees collecting clothes and Christmas presents for the family).
I want health care to be available to everyone... rich or poor...healthy or disabled, whether the provider is faith based or not. But I don't like the health care industry promoting itself by taking all the credit for an occasional good deed. Our health insurance premiums have gone up more than 75% since my spouse and I retired in 2000. And I understand helping those who can't pay is built into my charge for hospital care...perhaps moreso since Bush cut funding to Medicaid.
One more thing...this particular ad showed "Kenneth" surrounded by his spouse and eleven children. Perhaps Alegent Health should offer free family planning clinics.
